 2. Greetings from the president

Dear ESRS Member

Welcome to the Spring newsletter. There are several important items in this edition of
our newsletter. It is the time when we call for expressions of interest to run both the Postgraduate Summer School (next one is in 2014) and the bi-annual Congress (in 2015). Details of how to ‘express’ interest follow below.

The ESRS also needs to elect a new President and Committee members. Many of those
of us currently occupying the posts are not eligible to stand for election again, as explained
in the newsletter, so we will need to ensure that members come forward to stand. PLEASE
get involved by standing, nominating or seconding and then voting in Florence.

As well as the President and new committee members, the Society will also be seeking a
new Editor for its journal, Sociologia Ruralis. The existing editor, Henry Buller, who has
done a wonderful job will also come to the end of his period of tenure and will need to
be replaced as editor. Again, there are details of how to nominate or express interest in
this post in the newsletter.

Since the Congress in Chania the Executive Committee has undertaken a review of the
ESRS Constitution – details of this are on the website and members need to review the suggested changes as we will be voting on these in Florence at the General Assembly.

Finally, preparations for the Congress in Florence are well underway and hopefully all
members are planning to come! See you there.

 Jo Little, ESRS President

3. Revisions to the ESRS Constitution

It was recognised at Chania that the existing ESRS constitution is a little vague
regarding the possible re-election of the President and members of the EC and also
makes it difficult to vary the possibilities for electing key officers to the Society. The EC
have therefore proposed a few minor changes to clarify the period of tenure for the
President and members of the EC. We have also added a clause to allow us to elect
members who had not previously been nominated in the event of nobody coming forward
for election before the GA. Please take some time to review these minor changes on our website so that we can vote for them (or against them) at the GA:

term as Editor at the end of the current year. We are looking to appoint a new Editor for
the Journal.

5. Nominations for president and other members of the executive committee

At the General Assembly in the Florence Congress a new ESRS President and other
members of the Executive Committee will be elected. All posts are available although
some members of the EC are eligible for a further period of office. See how to get involved
in the process of nominating, seconding and voting in Florence: [pdf]
